KEY POINTS: True fungi consist of molds and yeasts. Yeasts are oval or round and usually lack hyphae, but may have pseudohyphae. A common pathogenic yeast is Candida. Candida albicans is a natural colonizer of the human vagina and mouth, and may become a predominant species in immunocompromised patients, patients on broad spectrum antibiotics, or simply during hormonal changes during menses, leading to infection. Other Candida species involved in vaginitis are C. glabrata and C. tropicalis. Oral or intravaginal azoles are the treatments of choice. |
