Objective 3.1: Gray matter and white matter in the cerebrum

Brain-cerebrum gray and white matter, LFB-H&E stain

This slide opens at 5x magnification.  Luxol fast blue (LFB) stains myelin dark blue.  The gray matter is the outside layer of the tissue (top), and the white matter, stained dark blue, is internal to the gray matter (bottom of image).  Gray matter contains neurons and all types of CNS glia.  White matter contains axons (but not neuronal cell bodies) and all types of glia.  The oligodendrocytes in the white matter provide the myelin sheaths surrounding the axons.
